Thea Augustina Eck’s work has been shown nationally and internationally in such spaces as the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA and the Arctic Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark. She has received grants to do archive research in England, Norway and Denmark on 19th century Arctic/Antarctic exploratory history, which inspired the It Is Never Tomorrow and mining the arc photographic series and Expeditioning drawing series. From 2008-2009, Eck completed a research fellowship at the Arctic Institute in Copenhagen Denmark made possible through the American-Scandinavian Foundation and the Lois Roth Endowment. Her culminating exhibition, Angalavaa: An Archive Tale, received an Artist Grant from the United States Embassy in Denmark. Eck’s work has been featured in solo shows at the 1708 Gallery, VA, The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, PA, and the Earlville Opera House, NY in the past year. Currently, Eck is working on a five-chapter installation series concerning Sir Ernest Shackleton's autobiography South, about the Imperial TransAntarctic Expedition of 1914. Eck received her B.A.F.A. from Alfred University and the New York State School for Ceramics and her MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan. Her studio is currently based in Ann Arbor, MI and Pittsburgh, PA. |
